Eye surgery

Not every eye disease needs surgery – but when it makes sense, we want you to know exactly what lies ahead for you and your pet. We only ever decide whether a procedure is necessary after a thorough eye examination, together with you.

Surgery takes place exclusively at our practice in Greifswald, regardless of where your pet is otherwise treated.

Before surgery

We discuss the findings with you, possible alternatives to surgery, the planned procedure and the expected aftercare. For some procedures – such as cataract surgery – a general health check beforehand is advisable so that your pet copes well with the anaesthetic.

On the day of surgery

Most eye operations are performed under general anaesthesia; some minor procedures – such as removing an eyelid margin tumour – can also be done under local anaesthesia. As a rule, your pet can go home the same day.

Aftercare

Depending on the procedure, eye drops need to be given regularly for a few days to several weeks, often together with a protective collar so that your pet cannot rub or scratch the eye. Sutured wounds are checked after 8–10 days and the stitches removed. We will arrange the necessary follow-up appointments with you.

Procedures we offer

Our surgical range extends from corneal, eyelid, third eyelid and tear duct surgery to glaucoma and cataract surgery, as well as pain-relieving procedures on eyes that can no longer see. Details on the individual conditions and the appropriate surgical techniques can be found on the topic pages under Ophthalmology.
